Attachment Style Isn't Destiny

Post in our ongoing daily series on the top concerns clients bring to Integrative Mind Body Psychiatry.

Attachment style is one of the most useful concepts in modern psychiatry — and one of the most misused. People online sometimes speak of attachment styles like blood types: you are one, you'll always be one, and everyone else must accommodate.

That is not what the science says. Attachment style is a pattern learned in your earliest relationships — and it can absolutely shift in adulthood with the right relationships, work, and self-awareness.

The Four Attachment Styles in Brief

  • Secure — comfortable with closeness and independence

  • Anxious — fear of abandonment, high need for reassurance

  • Avoidant — discomfort with closeness, self-reliant to a fault

  • Disorganized — a mix of both, often from early trauma or inconsistency

How Attachment Shifts

You do not become secure by finding a partner. You become 'earned secure' through consistent experiences of safe, attuned relationships — including with therapists, mentors, close friends, and yes, with God.

Five Whole-Person Steps

  1. Learn your pattern honestly, without shame.

  2. Notice what triggers your specific pattern — and slow down before reacting from it.

  3. Repair, don't rupture. When you get activated, name it and come back to the conversation.

  4. Choose consistent, safe relationships. Attachment heals in safe attachment.

  5. Consider attachment-based therapy — EFT, IFS, and trauma-informed work all help.

You can heal in relationship. I see patients via telehealth in Utah at integrativemindbodypsychiatry.com.
