Divorce Is a Nervous System Event

Post in our ongoing daily series on the top concerns clients bring to Integrative Mind Body Psychiatry.
Divorce is one of the most physiologically traumatic events an adult can go through. It ranks near the death of a spouse on classic stress scales. And yet we often treat it as a legal transaction — as if signing papers were the whole story.
It is not. Divorce is a nervous system event.
What Divorce Does to the Body
Sleep collapses — often for months
Immune function drops
Cortisol dysregulation drives anxiety, weight change, and mood volatility
Grief without permission — because 'you chose this' or 'you should be relieved'
Loneliness that is different from any other loneliness
Five Whole-Person Steps
Sleep is medicine. Whatever it takes — melatonin, magnesium, screen boundaries — protect it.
Eat. Divorce takes appetite. You need protein.
Move gently and daily. Movement discharges the grief the nervous system cannot name.
Build one weekly ritual of safety. Church, a walk with a friend, a small group.
Get psychiatric and therapeutic support early. Divorce depression is common and treatable.
Divorce is not a moral failing. It is a transition your body will feel for a long time. I see patients via telehealth in Utah at integrativemindbodypsychiatry.com.
