Postpartum: The Year No One Tells You About

The hormonal cliff after birth is one of the most dramatic biological events a human body can go through. Add sleep deprivation, identity change, breastfeeding, and isolation, and it is no wonder so many new mothers struggle. This is not weakness. It is biology meeting circumstance.

What I Watch For

  • Persistent sadness or numbness past 2 weeks

  • Intrusive, scary thoughts

  • Rage that surprises you

  • Anxiety that will not let you sleep even when the baby is sleeping

  • Disconnection from baby or partner

Five Whole-Person Steps

  1. Get a thyroid panel — postpartum thyroiditis is common and missed.

  2. Replenish nutrients — iron, B12, omega-3s, vitamin D, protein.

  3. Sleep in protected blocks — trade off with your partner or a helper.

  4. Get outside daily even if briefly.

  5. Ask for psychiatric care early. Postpartum mood disorders respond beautifully to treatment.

Attachment Style Isn't Destiny

Anxious. Avoidant. Disorganized. Secure. Your attachment style is a pattern learned in childhood — and it can shift.
