Sleep Is the Foundation of Mental Health

If I could prescribe one thing for almost every patient I see, it would be sleep. Not eight perfect hours on a bedside chart — real, restorative, repeated sleep. There is no medication, supplement, or therapy that performs without it.

Why Sleep Matters So Much

During deep and REM sleep, the brain clears metabolic waste, consolidates memory, regulates mood circuitry, and resets the stress response. Take sleep away and anxiety, depression, irritability, blood sugar, and pain all worsen — usually within a few days.

Five Whole-Person Steps

  1. Same wake time, every day — even weekends. This anchors your circadian rhythm more than bedtime does.

  2. Morning sunlight in your eyes within an hour of waking.

  3. Caffeine cutoff by noon — its half-life is longer than most people think.

  4. A dark, cool, quiet, phone-free bedroom.

  5. A 30-minute wind-down — dim lights, no screens, prayer or reading, herbal tea.

When to Get Help

If you have done the basics for 3–4 weeks and still cannot sleep — or if anxiety, depression, or perimenopause is breaking your nights — it is time. Untreated insomnia is fuel for nearly every psychiatric condition.
