The teenage brain is the most plastic, vulnerable, and miraculous version of the human brain. Handing it an unlimited smartphone is the largest unsupervised experiment in human history, and we are seeing the results in my exam room every week.
What Screens Are Doing
Disrupting sleep
Hijacking dopamine and reward systems
Replacing real connection with parasocial scroll
Feeding comparison, anxiety, and body image distress
Crowding out movement, sunlight, and family time
Five Whole-Person Steps for Parents
No phones in bedrooms at night. Non-negotiable.
Delay social media as long as possible.
Family meals 3+ times a week.
Outside, daily, ideally together.
Be the parent, not the friend. Boundaries are love.
